PAPER PROTOTYPE

INTRODUCTION

Paper prototype is the method that been used by developer to create software that meet the user needs. Paper prototyping is a rough or hand sketching of interface to get useful feedback to design better products. The benefit of using this method is save time and money since it enables the developers to test their product to the user. Paper prototyping will allow the developer to get the user feedback in a short time. Besides that, the paper prototyping method gives the user freedom on making any response or feedback.
In this assignment, the student had given a task in creating two different paper prototyping of interfaces that should be fundamentally different from each other. Each student need to creating three type of interface that is easy, medium and hard prototype. The next step is the student need discuss which prototype meet the usability goals

OBJECTIVE
The objective of paper prototype is to redesign the pervasive computing after doing some the usability test. The student needs redesign the interface of the pervasive computing based on the interface design principles and guidelines presented in the lecture.

THE REFLECTION OF THE LEARNING OUTCOME
The student will gain experience in applying the design principles and guidelines. Besides that, the student also can get experience in explaining the design based on the principles.

The task analysis
For this assignment, the student needs to redesign three type of pervasive computing. The student also needs in redesign three designs for easy, medium and hard.

Easy
For the easy categories, the pervasive computing that been chosen is light switch. The switch is widely been use in many houses to turn on the electricity appliances. In this assignment, the switch needs to redesign in the term of interface into the new design that will achieve usability goals.
MEDIUM
For the medium categories, the pervasive computing that been chosen is projector. The projector is widely been use in office or universities to show power point slides. To achieve the usability goals, the student needs to redesign the interface to the new design.
HARD

For the hard categories, the pervasive computing that been chosen is prepaid mobile to-up machine. This machine can be seen in many shops. This machine needs to redesign to the new interface that will achieve the usability goals.

THE ANALYSIS OF THE PROTOTYPES.

EASY (LIGHT SWITCH)
Based on the design, the prototype that achieves the usability goals is the design 2. The design 2 contains some of additional specific elements. For the button, the design 2 has label button. The label button will help the user to identify which the button on or off. Besides that, the design 2 also has light controller that use to control the light brightness. On the other hand, the design 1 only has switch for on and off only. The design do not has label which help the user to identified the light on of off.

MEDIUM (PROJECTOR)
Based on the proposed design, the prototype that achieves the usability goals is design 2. The different of design 1 and design 2 is most of the button use icon-label. The design 2 also reduces the number of button on the interface. By using icon, the users more understand. Every interface of pervasive computing needs to reduce the amount of button.

HARD (PREPAID mobile to-up machine)
according to the design of prototype, the design that meets the usability goals is design 2. Based on the design 2, the design has fewer buttons, which help the user quick to understand how to use the machine. The buttons also specified with label and color.

IDENTIFY SPECIFIC ELEMENTS ON THE INTERFACE PROTOTYPE.

EASY (LIGHT SWITCH)
The specific elements in the design 2 are button, labels and LED light. The buttons are commonly used in any pervasive computing. Button that use in this design are for the on and off light and the brightness control. The buttons are easier to learnt. Besides that, the design also implements labels. The labels help the user to understand the function. Each button for this design is labeled. For the brightness controller, it also have LED button to indicate which button is press.

MEDIUM (PROJECTOR)
The specific elements on the design 2 are button, label, LED light and speaker. The types of button on the interface are volume, turn on and off, slides resize and exit. Besides that, the interface also includes the speaker for the sound.

HARD (PREPAID MOBILE TOUP MACHINE)
Design 2 was design with few elements in the interface such as button, label and screen. There will include button for menu, exit, select and cancel. In the interface also insert the label for the certain button. Labels are very useful to guide the user to usage of the button. Lastly, the usage of screen is giving the user message.

CONCLUSION
As the conclusion, paper prototype is very useful for the designer to identify the usability goals. Besides that, the user opinion or responses give the ideas for the developer to create new interface for meet the user needs. It is very important to get the user opinion before develop any device or design so that user will easy to use it.
